Selling your home is one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make – especially if you’ve lived in your property for any length of time. It may be where your children have grown up and will, undoubtedly, be full of memories and now, you’re thinking of downsizing. Alternatively, this may be your first house sell, so you want to make sure you are making a decision that is right for you.
Either way, before you start getting your house ready for selling and contacting estate agents etc., you need to ensure YOU are ready for the journey ahead… and that requires a shift in mindset.
The biggest change you will be making is one of awareness. From this point onwards, you have to see your home as a product. It is no longer your family home, it is just a product that you are selling. It doesn’t matter what stories your home has accumulated – they hold no value to anyone other than you and your family.
Look around your house and remember what it was that attracted you to buy it. Was it the space? The location? How about the size of the rooms? Whatever it was, write them down, as these will be of use to you when you’re ready to put your house on the market.
Now make a list of what you are looking to achieve from selling your house. Is it purely to have the money or are you looking to buy a different property? If you’re selling due to finances, what will you do with the money when you have it? Will you pay off bills or invest in something else? If it’s to buy another property, are you downsizing or upgrading? What will having that new property mean to you?
The idea here is to switch your focus from the memories in your existing house to your desired end result. You want to ramp up the excitement and emotion on the desired END RESULT – not the feelings and emotions attached to the existing property.
Ensure that EVERYONE in the house is on board with the decision to sell. Once you have made that decision, totally focus on your end result – your completed house sale or your next property.
If you need to ramp up your focus and motivation, write out a list of WHY you want to sell and pin it somewhere everyone can see it, like on your fridge or bathroom mirror.
Finally, remind yourself that the entire selling process is a journey. It’s a journey that may have attached emotions and worries – but ultimately, one that can be totally controlled by you – so control your thoughts, emotions and actions and let it head directly to your desired end result!
