Declutter your office space

Decluttering your office space may not be top of your priority list, but having a tidy working environment will help increase productivity and decrease wasted time hunting for lost items… so when WAS the last time you decluttered your office space?

declutter your deskYour space reflects you

When it comes to your office space, you spend the vast majority of your average day there – so it naturally will reflect you, your personality and your work ethics. So take a look around. Do you like what you see? If you took a photo of your office space, would you be happy to share that photo online…?

If you’re at all disappointed, disheartened or, if just looking around your space leaves you feeling like you need to back away, close the door and get on with the ironing or dusting elsewhere – you NEED to declutter and tidy your space! So take these following tips in mind:

Tip #1: Schedule in your declutter session

It’s easy to keep putting off your declutter session – so schedule in and block off the time in your diary.

Tip #2: Keep what you legally need to keep

There are some things you need to keep (and things you don’t!), in order to comply with data protection, client confidentiality, tax and accounts reasons etc. – make sure you know the rules and are complying with them.

Tip #3: Place for everything – like with like

The easiest way to get started with your decluttering is to make sure like is placed with like – and then every group of like items has its own dedicated space.

Tip #4: Organise that paperwork!

In a perfect world we’d have a paperless office but, in reality, this is seldom the case. So make sure you organise that paperwork. If you have a metal filing cabinet, make sure you’ve organised and labelled the drawers and files. You can easily buy magazine files and boxes, concertina files, and folders in both pretty and brand-related colours, so look to make use of them. Store them on a dedicated shelf or, if you’re limited on space, why not opt for plastic or metal hanging files and racks?

stylish workspaceTip #5: Sort out those cables or go wireless

Trailing cables not only look untidy, they also present a health and safety issue. Look to use a cable tidy, cable tacks or cable ties to keep your cables tidy and out of site. With wireless technology available now, there’s no reason why you can’t minimise the cables you have – so you may only have to worry about the power lead to your laptop and printer – meaning no messy cables on show!

Tip #6: Have an end of day ‘clear desk’ policy

A super easy habit to get into is the ‘clear desk’ policy. At the end of each day, spend 5 minutes clearing away and clearing your desk. Not only will it look tidy, it will also encourage you to be more productive, when you start work the following morning.

Tip #7: Once decluttered remember to put back in place

Once everything is tidy, don’t let it go to waste. Make sure you stick to putting things back in their place. If you pick up something, don’t just automatically move it to another pile – if it can be dealt with in 5 minutes, deal with it, if it needs filing, file it and if it needs binning, bin it! If none of these apply – THEN put it in your ‘to do’ tray.

Decluttering your office space may take a while, but once it’s done AND if you stick to these tips, you’ll long be reaping the rewards for that hard work and effort.

If you’re after more inspiration for decluttering, why not take a look at the Younique Designs app? It has a great decluttering book, called ‘Quick Start to Clearing Clutter’, ready for you to get clearing! You can get your copy of the app on either the iTunes app store or Google Play
